My name is Jack Arnold. I grew up in Dublin, Ireland before moving to England to study architecture. I believe everything has its own context and beauty lies in the arrangement of ideas, objects and emotions that reveals the true nature of the world surrounding us.
ABOUT ME
Brief: To form a response to the Hurricane and future-proof a site in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, New York. Our response was not flood resilience, but flood responsive, creating survival kits to aid New Yorkers should another storm hit the city.
Brief: To form a response to the Hurricane and future-proof a site in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, New York. Our response was not flood resilience, but flood responsive, creating survival kits to aid New Yorkers should another storm hit the city.
Proposed is a film school which caters to teenagers primarily from challenged backgrounds in the Niewe Weston region of Rotterdam. It offers them the chance to gain education outside of the traditional schooling. The medium of film transcends all boundaries created by different backgrounds, such as race, creed or gender and is accessible to everyone.
The cafe and cinema is placed in a converted tram station, creating a social space for the youth in the local area. The school is housed in a new building at the back of the Tramremise where the spaces are allowed to mingle, but can be separated when necessary. This allows each of the functions to work independently. The school feeds off the central atrium, which contains three main functions: an informal teaching space, student social space and a theatre space.

This work is the result of a collaboration with drama students in Oxford Brookes University. The brief required was to design a low cost set for Robert Harling’s play ‘Steel Magnolias’. The focus of the play is about the bond among a group of Southern women in northwest Louisiana. The play takes place in a hair salon where the characters who enter the salon reveal themselves, divulging in their personal troubles.

Prisoners of Katrina
A set design based around the night Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Based in a prison which was flooded during the storm, the story follows a group of prisoners who battle the elements throughout the night. The actors cannot see each other and are only visible to the audience to emphasise the isolation felt by the prisoners throughout the night. Concept design for Thesis Project
The lighting defines which characters are on stage, illuminating each cell from behind the actor. A sheet of semi-opaque plastic is placed between the stage and the spotlight to diffuse the light as it falls on the actor.

Closely examining the wicker furniture on my balcony one morning, I couldn't help but notice how constricting the closely woven fibres of the furniture appeared. These photographs attempt to capture the intricacies of the wicker and how restrictive it appears when viewed up close.
